My Condition
Had a half day at college today, so I decided to take Sophs out for something to eat. I really didn’t think about how it was going to look/feel for her. As we were walking down the road, the one near that freaky looking pub, she turned and said to me, “Don’t people usually hold hands on a date.” Man I didn’t know what to do. So……alright shut up!!!! Yeh, I held her hand. I shouldn’t have OK, it was wrong, especially with what I was about to tell her.
We sat down in this little restaurant. I ordered for us. I thought she was going to, ya know, get all romantic on me. But she she outright said, “Your condition is something pretty rare isn’t it?”
Something……well rare is the wrong word for it.” She turned to face me with a look in her eyes that I could have sworn I’d seen before.
“It’s really OK,” she said. “You don’t have to tell me.”
“I want to,” I replied.
I had come this far and I couldn’t back out now. “It’s just, every two years since I was twelve years old………….my memory kinda resets, I illustrated my point by making weird finger movments near where my brain should have been. “I lose all knowledge of people I’ve met, places I’ve been, things I have done. Everything in the last two years is gone.” Her eyes seemed to well up with tears, but I pressed on. “I go to see a specialist every now and again but there is no cure. As far as I know, I’ll be like this for the rest of my life.”
She reached across the table and held my hands, and then she cried, man did she cry.
